For years now, Procreate has been my go-to software for creating all of my digital illustrations. From stickers to product design, Procreate has allowed me to create my playful illustrations wherever I go. Its default brush sets are expansive and can be a little overwhelming to any first time users, but with a bit of experimenting, you'll soon find your favourites.
Here are my top five favourite procreate brushes - and the best part - they're all free!
1. 6B Pencil
First up is the 6B Pencil. This brush is my go-to for almost everything! From the initial sketching phase to even the colouring and outlines, I go for this brush every time. It's gorgeous textured quality, mixed with its pressure sensitive ability means that it's great for both keeping it loose and adding some lovely textured detail.
2. Bonobo Chalk
Next up is the Bonobo Chalk brush. This brush is great for shading! It's grainy texture helps to add depth to any illustration and can be stunning when used for adding interesting highlights to a piece.
3. Jagged Brush
The Jagged Brush is a recent favourite of mine. It's textured, painterly quality is absolutely gorgeous and it's wonderful to help you loosen up with your brush strokes. Keeping a larger brush size when using this brush means that you can create some really lovely Illustrations that focus more on shape, tone and light/shadow rather than focusing too much on the small details!
4. Gloaming
Gloaming is a brush I recently discovered and is one I'm having a lot of fun with! It has the most fun texture that helps to give a distressed painterly look to your piece. It's also amazing for layering, meaning you can build your illustration from the bottom up!
5. Monoline
Finally, the Monoline brush. This brush is an absolute staple to any brush collection in Procreate. Its added stability makes it perfect for adding smooth lines to a piece. I've even created an edited version of the Monoline brush to help me outline my stickers! You can watch a tutorial for this here!
